Kisumu, Kenya has long been known for artisans who make products from “easily obtained materials”, a nice way of saying “trash”. These bicycles earrings are made of copper and steel wire, presenting a whimsical view of Kenyan life. Fair trade and recycled, it just doesn’t get any better, while in Chile, the media of fused glass and enameled copper are those that few artisans dare to choose. The difficulties in working with these materials multiplies when one is in a country where utilities and transport are unreliable, and raw material are not easily obtained. Copper prices have sky-rocketed, so much so that even in the US, copper wire is stolen and sold. These earrings are not just handmade art, they illustrate the lifelong commitment the artisans have to their craft.
